Territorial behavior
In the spring, male birds are often very territorial and will attack anything they see as a threat to their territory, including their own reflection in a window. This behavior is most common in birds such as robins, cardinals, and mockingbirds.
Confusion
Birds sometimes mistake windows for open space, especially if the window reflects trees or other natural features. This can lead to birds flying into windows, especially at night when it is dark and the birds cannot see the glass.
Reflection of food
If your windows reflect food sources, such as bird feeders or birdbaths, birds may be attracted to the reflection and try to fly through it to get to the food. This can lead to birds hitting the window and being injured.
Reflection of other birds
If your windows reflect other birds, birds may see the reflection as a potential mate or rival and try to interact with it. This can lead to birds hitting the window and being injured.
